who we are what we do why we do it

The Young Professionals Committee is comprised of active participants who are dedicated to a common cause: helping Big Brothers Big Sisters match at-risk youth with mentors throughout Northern Nevada by building awareness, fundraising, and personally recruiting mentors.

With all of our ideas working to strengthen and carry out just one mission, we are able to make a significant impact in our community. The YPC has made incredible strides in the past two years and we intend to grow the committee, our fundraising efforts and our marketing campaigns this year and in the years to come.

The members of the YPC actively help with community outreach and fund development for Big Brothers Big Sisters while developing leadership skills and making connections with various business and community leaders. Our responsibilities range from developing marketing campaigns to event planning to securing funding and in-kind donations from local businesses.

While socializing and networking are a large part of our process, we are not a networking club, but a committee with a purpose. We have expectations of every member on the committee to attend meetings regularly, make worthwhile contributions, and commit to at least one year of service at a time. One of the goals of the YPC is to have the dedicated members eventually serve on the board for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

We meet the last Wednesday of each month from 6-7:00pm. Each month we have a new company host, varying from large corporations to local restaurants to members’ backyard BBQ’s. We like to have fun while accomplishing big things!

Every child deserves a future.
There are thousands of children here in our own backyard facing life challenges that we as adults cannot even fathom. Often the only way to help these kids is to have a dedicated, caring individual take the time to listen to them, engage them in fun, healthy activities, and show them that they have the potential to achieve happiness and success in the present as well as the future.
Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring makes a huge difference for the youth it serves. Research has demonstrated that Little Brothers and Little Sisters are:

  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs;
  • 27% less likely to begin using alcohol;
  • 52% less likely to skip school;
  • 37% less likely to skip class;
  • More confident in their schoolwork performance;
  • Able to get along better with their families.
